Set up - Outlook Express
If you have an e-mail account to go with your site, follow these instructions to set up your e-mail account on your PC.
For most users Outlook Express will be perfectly adequate; however if you wish to use the full Outlook version then instructions are shown on the next page.
It may be easier to follow if you print this page before starting.
Start Outlook Express, you do not need to be on-line to set up the new account.
- Select TOOLS from the menu bar
- Select ACCOUNTS from the dropdown
- New screen opens
Select the MAIL tab - Select ADD button (top right of dialogue box) and select MAIL from flyout
- New screen opens
Enter your name (or whatever you wish to be known as, I use Andrew @ netsemblance)
When done click NEXT - New screen opens
Enter the actual e-mail address that will be used, ie: yourname@yoursite.com
(Italic part needs to be changed to reflect your actual details and the 'yourname' part must reflect the details I put on the server and must be in lower case)
When done click NEXT. - New screen opens
Leave the first box as is (should show Incoming server is POP3)
Further down the dialogue box enter:
In INCOMING MAIL (POP3) enter mail.yoursite.com
In OUTGOING MAIL (SMTP) enter mail.yoursite.com
When done click NEXT - New screen opens
Enter name and password that you have been given, these must match with the details I put on the server and must be in lower case - NB:
The name box must be your full e-mail address (eg: yourname@yoursite.com)
Ensure that the LOG ON USING SECURE PASSWORD box is unticked
When done click NEXT - New screen opens
Click FINISH - You should now return to the screen we started with and the new account will be visible
- Select the new account (so it becomes highlighted)
- Press the PROPERTIES button, (to the right of the dialogue box)
- Select the SERVERS tab
- Ensure that the MY SERVER REQUIRES AUTHENTICATION box has a tick in it
- Click on the CONNECTION tab
- Tick the box next to ALWAYS CONNECT TO THIS SERVICE USING and then select your prefered ISP from the dropdown list (there may only be one)
- Click on the GENERAL tab
- Ensure that the INCLUDE THIS ACCOUNT WHEN RECEIVING MAIL box is ticked (at the bottom of the dialogue box)
- Click OK.
- Click on the ADVANCED tab
- At the bottom of the dialogue box there is a section called DELIVERY, ensure that the box marked LEAVE A COPY ON THE SERVER is unticked
- All done
When you next go on line and check for mail, the new account will also check the server for mail
To send mail from your new account:
- Create a new e-mail
- The FROM name line will have a drop down box at the right hand side (only if you have other accounts as well as the one you just created)
- Select this and choose the account you wish to send from
To make your new account the default ie: your main e-mail address, (any others will still work fine):
- Select TOOLS and ACCOUNTS as above
- Select the e-mail account to be made the default account (highlight it)
- Press the SET AS DEFAULT BUTTON on the right of the dialogue box
- All done
NOTE:
Some ISP's have started blocking 3rd party accounts (ie: like the above set up). Should you encounter problems sending e-mails from your site e-mail address take the following actions:
- Start Outlook Express, you do not need to be on-line
- Select TOOLS from the menu bar
- Select ACCOUNTS from the dropdown
- New screen opens
Select the MAIL tab. - Select and highlight the e-mail account
- Press PROPERTIES button
- Select ADVANCED tab
At the top of the dialogue box you will see OUTGOING MAIL (SMTP) and an entry box next to it. The current entry will probably be 25, if not, make a note of the number - Change this number to 8025
- Press APPLY and then OK
- Close the mail box
- All done
FURTHER NOTE FOR AOL USERS:
AOL have in place further restrictions on using mail clients other than their own
If you have AOL as a primary method of connecting to the Internet then follow the instructions above, but set your OUTGOING MAIL to 587
